The Golden City of Spain
If you’re tired of the massive crowds in Madrid or Barcelona, let me introduce you to my personal favorite: Salamanca. Known as La Dorada (The Golden City) because of the sandstone buildings that glow at sunset, it feels like walking through a living movie set.
Whether you’re a student looking for a home base or a traveler looking for a weekend escape, here is why it needs to be on your list:
The Best Plaza in Spain: People say the Plaza Mayor here is the most beautiful in the country, and they aren't lying. It’s the heart of the city and perfect for grabbing a café con leche and people-watching for hours.
University Vibes: This is one of the oldest university towns in the world. The energy is young, the nightlife is legendary, and it’s actually affordable for a student budget.
The Hidden "Lucky" Frog: There’s a famous legend that if you can find the carved frog on the University’s facade, you’ll have good luck (and pass all your exams!).
Local Hangouts: Beyond the cathedrals, the local scene is where the magic happens. Places like O’hara’s Irish Pub, Irish Theater, Camelot Club and Berlin are some staples for meeting locals and fellow travelers over a drink.
Top Restaurants: La Tagliatelle, Five Napoli Pizza, Nero, Brooklyn & Co, Panka Street Food, La Vacavieja are a few of so many more amazing options to eat!
Pro Tip for Your Visit
Enjoy every minute while you are there. Take a chance to see the Plaza Mayor light up and head to the Roman Bridge at sunset. The way the light hits the Tormes River is an actual dream for your Instagram feed.
